Mr Kushner, who is married to President Trump’s daughter Ivanka and currently serves as a senior adviser, will lead the newly formed White House Office of American Innovation with an eye on leveraging business ideas and potentially privatising some government functions, the Washington Post reports.

“The government should be run like a great American company. Our hope is that we can achieve successes and efficiencies for our customers, who are the citizens,” Mr Kushner told the Post in an interview.

Some of the areas he will focus on are veterans’ care, opioid addiction, technology and data infrastructure, workforce training and infrastructure, according to the report.

In a statement to the Post, Trump said: “I promised the American people I would produce results, and apply my ‘ahead of schedule, under budget’ mentality to the government.” Representatives for the White House did not immediately reply to a request to confirm the report.

KUSHNER TO BE QUESTIONED OVER RUSSIA TIES

It comes amid reports Mr Kushner will be questioned by a Senate panel about a meeting he arranged with a Russian ambassador.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, which has been looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, wants to talk to Mr Kushner about meetings with Kremlin envoy Sergey Kislyak, the New York Times reported.

The White House has confirmed that Mr Kushner met Mr Kislyak in early December at Trump Tower, but the report said Mr Kislyak requested another meeting that month.

Mr Kushner asked a deputy to attend that meeting. But later Mr Kushner met with Sergey Gorkov, head of Vnesheconombank, which the Obama administration hit with sanctions after Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea, the report said.

A White House spokeswoman acknowledged the meetings, but said they were routine discussions.

Hope Hicks said Mr Kushner met with foreign government officials as part of his duties with the Trump transition. She said he is willing to appear before the panel.

“He isn’t trying to hide anything,” she told the newspaper.

Michael Flynn, Mr Trump’s national security adviser, stepped down in February after reports revealed he met with Mr Kislyak and misled White House officials about the meetings.
