The passengers didn’t realise the train was coming towards her until it was too late.

IF EVER you needed proof wearing headphones around public transport is not a good idea, this is it.

A woman in India was run over by a train when she was distracted chatting away on her mobile.

Dramatic footage from Mumbai’s Kurla station shows passengers scrambling to rush to the woman’s aid following the life threatening incident.

The video begins with passengers patiently waiting for an oncoming train. Within seconds, however, it’s clear something is wrong as people begin pointing to something off screen.

Suddenly, a woman comes running down the railway track right in the path of the incoming train. Appearing to spot the imminent danger she is in, she swerves looking for an exit route.

However, there’s no time and in the last second she turns away from the train and put her hands over her eyes. The front of the train slams into her, knocking her to the ground and she is pushed beneath the train.

News.com.au has not been able to verify when the incident occurred or the person involved. However, local media has reported that the incident occurred in mid-May with the woman involved being 19-year-old Pratiksha Natekar.

Mid-Day.com reported that Ms Natekar had taken the train to meet a friend.

She was chatting on the phone, with her headphones plugged in, when she decided to use the tracks to cross between platforms.

“As she was busy over the phone, she didn’t hear a goods train thundering down the tracks. When she suddenly looked up the train had already reached her.

“She panicked and ran first towards the platform and then straight into the train,” said senior police inspector Ashok Bhorade from Kurla Government Railway Police.

However, miraculously, the woman survived the trauma of being dragged beneath the engine and was pulled free by commuters. She was taken to hospital but had no major injuries.

Although the sight of someone running along the tracks might raise eyebrows in Australia, in India it’s very common.

In 2016, half of the 3200 fatalities on Mumbai’s railway network were caused by people crossing tracks, reported the Hindustan Times.

An average of eight people were killed every day on railway tracks last year and 81 died at Kurla station alone, where Ms Natekar almost met her maker.

In April, a New Zealand women narrowly avoided death when she walked in front of a train — again, with her headphones on.

The chilling footage, released by Auckland Transport, shows the woman only looking to her right before stepping out onto the tracks at Mount Eden station, despite the flashing warning lights and signs prompting pedestrians to look to the left — the direction in which the train will approach.

Luckily, she realises just in time and speeds up to avoid being hit by the speeding train.
