Patrons enjoying one of Melbourne's most famous cafe strips have been evacuated due to billowing smoke from a fire.

Police cleared Degraves Street after smoke filled the grafitti-covered laneway on Wednesday afternoon. 

An MFB spokesman said the fire, which started in a cafe, was already under control and that a smoke advice would be issued. 

The Melbourne Library on Flinders Lane was also evacuated.
