Police are investigating after a man was found dead in a coal wagon at the Port of Brisbane.

The body was found about midday, when police were called to the scene.

A police spokesman said the wagon was connected to a coal train that had been carrying coal from Chinchilla, roughly four hours north-west of the city.

The train had originated from the Cameby Downs open cut coal mine near Chinchilla, a spokesman for Chinese government-controlled miner Yancoal Australia confirmed.

The Cameby Downs mine produces thermal coal which is shipped to the Queensland Bulk Handling facility at the Port of Brisbane, according to the company's website.

A QBH spokeswoman declined to comment.
