Car maker Ford's Australian business is facing legal action for allegedly giving customers the bum steer about "systemic issues" around transmissions in several of its models and blaming drivers for the problem.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is taking action in the Federal Court against Ford Motor Company of Australia over its handling of customers who had problems with Ford Focus, Fiesta and EcoSport vehicles with a PowerShift transmission bought between 2011 and 2016.

About half of 70,000 vehicles sold had at least one repair relating transmission, the ACCC says, with customers complaining about "excessive shuddering and jerking when accelerating, loss of gear selection and sudden loss of power and/or excessive noisiness".
