Richmond Tigers captain Trent Cotchin will play in Saturday’s AFL grand final against the Adelaide Crows after the Match Review Panel cleared him on Monday morning over a collision with GWS midfielder Dylan Shiel, who subsequently left the field concussed.

The panel concluded that Cotchin was in a contest for the ball and the contact “was not unreasonable in the circumstances”.

After first quarter clash, when the two sides were evenly poised, Shiel was hit high by Richmond defender David Astbury 10 minutes later and left the field with concussion, missing the rest of the preliminary final, which the Tigers won by 36 points to make their first grand final since 1982.

While Shiel was first to the ball and bent over, Cochin came in low and fast from the side, his shoulder slamming into the side of Shiel’s head. The panel said there was uncertainty around the exact cause of the concussion on Shiel.

Rivals Adelaide also received the all clear from the panel for his clash with Patrick Dangerfield in the second quarter of Friday’s victory against Geelong, who concluded the contact was also not unreasonable in the circumstances.

Richmond midfielder Brandon Ellis also escaped censure for his high bump on Lachine Whitfield in the final quarter, with the panel saying he was contesting the ball.
