Better-than-expected US company earnings and optimism that President Donald Trump's tax cuts will proceed has helped drive Australian shares higher. 

At 1030 AEST on Friday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 29.7 points, or 0.5 per cent, at 5,973.2 with all sectors, bar utilities, stronger. 

In the US, risk appetite returned amid optimism that the Republican's tax reform package would pass the US House of Representatives, and on solid company earnings results.
