The Australian maker of a sonar-based shark detection system, which was recently adopted for trial in southern California, has dropped its toothy name as it chases bigger fish.

Perth-based Shark Mitigation Systems, which debuted on the Australian share market in 2016 selling patented camouflage technology to hide surfers and swimmers from sharks, is changing its name to Smart Marine Systems.

Managing director Craig Anderson says the new name reflects the company's future direction.
