Adelaide-based submarine builder ASC is cutting almost 200 jobs, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) says.

The AMWU said most of the 197 job losses would affect "permanent, full-time, highly skilled" workers.

The union said the cuts were occurring despite promises workers would be transitioned into other projects, and accused Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne of "not consulting with workers".

"Minister Pyne looked shipbuilders in the eye and promised them that the work and their jobs were now secure," AMWU national assistant secretary Glenn Thompson said.

More to come.
