Church sell off

UPDATED: TASMANIAN Treasurer Peter Gutwein will meet Anglican Church leaders to clarify “a range of matters” after constituents raised concerns about a fire sale of church assets.

Tasmania’s Anglican Diocese wants to sell dozens of historic churches to help fund millions of dollars in redress for survivors of child sexual abuse under a plan that has many rural people worried about the impact on small communities.

The church body plans to sell more than 100 properties, including 76 churches plus halls, houses and blocks of land, with about a quarter of the proceeds earmarked for redress.

The full list will be made public after the church’s Synod in June. It will then be open for community consultation, with a final list decided in December.

“I want to understand on what basis the properties will be sold and how cemeteries specifically will be dealt with,” Mr Gutwein told reporters today.

Tasmania is yet to join NSW, Victoria and the ACT in joining the national redress scheme that stemmed from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

“We’re working through this matter and we’ll have more to say in coming weeks,” Mr Gutwein said.

“I’m hopeful we’ll be able to make a positive announcement.

“Tasmania as a jurisdiction is in a different position to most jurisdictions as we’ve already run a state-based scheme.

“We need to work through those matters, as well as the national scheme at the same time.”

EARLIER: TASMANIA’S rural communities are reacting with shock at plans to put historic churches on the market as part of the Anglican Church’s fire sale of assets.

Southern Midlands Mayor Tony Bisdee said eight of the nine churches in his municipality had been earmarked for sale, including the convict-built St James’ Church at Jericho and St Mary’s at Kempton — which still holds services once a month.

The “rural cathedral” at Bothwell is also on the list.

Only St Peter’s at Oatlands will remain.

“I understand there needs to be rationalisation but the community is a bit shocked. They are not just buildings to us, they are a big part of the community’s history,” Cr Bisdee said.

“I am sure community groups could be set up to maintain the properties, but it is unlikely funds could be raised to buy the churches.”

The church says a quarter of the money raised through the sale of 108 properties across the state will go towards the national redress scheme to compensate victims of childhood sexual abuse.

The Dioceson Council will makes its final decision in December on which properties will be sold.

Talkback radio in Tasmania was flooded with call from parishioners and community members upset by the sale plans.

There was also much discussion on social media about the fire sale, including the news that St Martin’s church in Queenstown could be put on the market.

A Queenstown resident said 50 per cent of the funerals in the West Coast town were held at St Martin’s.

People in Evandale were also shocked St Andrew’s — where their parents, grandparents and themselves were christened — could go under the hammer.
