A raccoon has scaled more than 20 storeys up a high-rise building in the United States to reach the roof, captivating onlookers and people around the world as its progress was tracked through live streams.

The animal interrupted work and caused anxiety for many who feared for its safety as it progressed up the UBS Tower in Minnesota, intermittently stopping to rest on ledges.

Nearby Minnesota Public Radio branded the raccoon with the hashtag #MPRraccoon, and it was soon trending on Twitter.

The animal's skyscraper adventure has since come to an end, with a "delicious meal of soft cat food," and a meeting with local wildlife experts.

The raccoon was first spotted on a ledge on Tuesday morning (local time), just a few stories high.

St Paul Animal Control believed it may have been there all night before it started heading skyward.
