Hobart boxer Luke Jackson's hopes of a world title have been dashed after his team threw in the towel in the ninth round.

Jackson entered the ring as the underdog against highly rated Northern Irish opponent Carl Frampton for the WBO World Featherweight title.

The 33-year-old from Clarendonvale was hoping to claim his first professional world title, after bagging national and regional belts in the past 18 months.

But Frampton, who is the current world champion, proved too strong, dominating the fight from the first round.

Jackson landed a superb blow in the sixth round, but it did little to deter the world champion, who appeared unstoppable.

The Tasmanian went down in the eighth round, but he managed to get back up before bowing out in the ninth round.

The competition was never expected to be close with bookmakers heavily backing Frampton in the lead up to the fight.

The previously undefeated Jackson has stated throughout his professional career that his first loss will be his last, vowing to hang up his gloves as soon as he tastes defeat.
