Malcolm Turnbull's prime ministership is in crisis, with Peter Dutton and now Scott Morrison pitching for the top job.

It's an all-too familiar story for Australian voters, with the leadership of both the Labor and Liberal parties in turmoil in recent years.

Australians have watched back-and-forth leadership changes between Mr Turnbull and Tony Abbott on one side of politics, and Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard on the other.

Recently, Warren Truss led the National Party for a solid eight-year period and John Howard set the bar for stability in the Liberal Party.

In just shy of two months, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will enter his sixth year in charge — that would make his leadership Labor's most stable in 17 years, since the days of Kim Beazley.
