The volatility many suspected would be triggered by the shifts in policy from the world’s major central banks has well and truly arrived.
The sell-off in global equities has seen the ASX erase all of its gains for this year and the end of last week saw continued selling pressure on stocks around the world.
Su-Lin Ong is managing director at RBC Capital Markets, and also chief economist and head of Australian research. Her work spans the full range of asset classes from stocks to fixed income as well as Australian domestic policy.
She joins us on this week’s edition of our markets and economics podcast, Devils and Details. We talk through the global stocks shock, moves in fixed income markets, and Australian monetary policy. Ong last week published a research paper on the likely negative effects on house prices and domestic consumption from the Labor party’s proposed tax reforms.
You can find the show online here, or search “Devils and Details” on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.
And for those of you who got this far: we’re hosting a live version of the show at the Ivy in Sydney on November 27. Tickets are $50 and you can get them here. Come join us!
