A man has died after being stung by a stingray in waters near Hobart.

Tasmania Police confirmed the man was stung on his torso while swimming today at Lauderdale, about 13 kilometres east of Hobart.

A witness told the ABC she could see a "number of paramedics" performing CPR on a man at Roches Beach, Lauderdale, just after 3:00pm.

Police confirmed the man was not able to be resuscitated and died from the injury.

Other witnesses at the scene were too distraught to speak publicly.

The age and name of the man have not been released.
