Things haven’t been pretty for a long time in Phoenix for the city’s NBA team and for owner Robert Sarver, life only got more grim during the week.

As the Suns languish at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, rumours began to swirl he was looking to relocate the team.

Sarver purchased the franchise back in 2004 and despite two conference finals appearances, the team has failed to make the playoffs in eight straight seasons.

Pundits have labelled Phoenix one of the worst-run franchises thanks to a host of baffling moves made by the man in charge.

And it was the latest report that really ticked off the Suns’ fan base.

Sarver reportedly told Phoenix city officials he may move the team to Seattle or Las Vegas, unless the public funded $US150 million of works to renovate home stadium Talking Stick Resort Arena.

The council vote was put on hold and two public meetings were put in place. That’s when things got ugly for Sarver.

Fans took to social media to voice their displeasure with the alleged threat from Sarver, but the most scathing attack came from 90-year-old Greta Rogers.

Rogers became an internet sensation after her speech at the public council meeting condemning the motion went viral.

“Mr. Sarver has done nothing to improve this team in the 14 years he’s owned it,” Rogers said.

“He’s never funded or bought — paid for — two or three key players, which makes any professional sports team successful or on the road to success.

“(Sarver’s) so tight he squeaks when he walks. And you have been negotiating with this kind of person? Shame on each and all of you.

“I thought your principles were higher and better than this.

“We are not in the business of paying taxes to support private enterprise and especially not an entertainment enterprise.

“They can support themselves or fail on their own lack of diligence.”

The visceral take-down saw the biggest companies in sports media in ESPN, Yahoo Sports, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports and Bleacher Report shine a light on her message.

And in an interview with the Phoenix New Times following her stunning smackdown, Rogers didn’t back down from her stance.

“As long as he runs this teams the way he’s run it, it will be a failure,” she said.

“We don’t have $150 million or any figure above that flopping around in a miscellaneous account wanting or wishing to be used before it goes obsolete and goes into a big slush fund for anything.”

The unforgiving attack from Rogers Suns fans on social media was followed up by a Sarver statement where he announced he had no intentions of ever moving the team away from Phoenix.

“Hello Suns fans, I hope you take a minute to listen to an important message that I want to share with you,” Sarver said in his statement.

“First and foremost, the Phoenix Suns are not leaving Phoenix. I’m 100 per cent committed and have been for the last four years to find a solution to keep them in downtown Phoenix where they belong.”

All we know is, we never want to get on the bad side of Greta Rogers. NBA owners take notice, reportedly threatening to relocate your organisation isn’t the best plan of attack.
