Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said the new flight route would grow already strong links between Perth and Japan while boosting the hospitality and tourism industries, paving the way for the creation of hundreds of local jobs.

“Our two-year action plan focuses on making WA the western gateway to the rest of Australia,” he said.

“An important part of the plan is increasing aviation access into the state, particularly from markets such as Japan which hasn’t had a direct air service to Perth since 2011.

“Millions and millions of potential customers for our tourism industry have not been able to get here because we haven’t had direct flights.”

Mr Papalia said the flights were the most attractive unserviced route to Australia at the moment.

“There are already more people travelling both ways from Perth to Tokyo than were flying in the entire year of the first seven days a week direct flight by Qantas to Brisbane,” he said.

Over three years it is estimated the Perth-Japan flights will attract about 76,000 Japanese visitors, providing a $175 million boost to the state’s economy.

Consul for Japan Kenji Miyata said he hoped the direct flight would attract more Japanese people to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of WA.

“We’re entering a new era,” he said. “Our relationship will be further expanded now.”

ANA senior vice president Seiichi Takahashi said he was excited to add Perth to the airline's list of world-class destinations.

"The city is celebrated worldwide as a tourist destination and economic hub," he said.

"We look forward to making it easier to travel between Tokyo and Perth."

Japan is WA’s ninth biggest market in terms of visitors, with the state attracting 28,700 Japanese visitors in 2017-18.

Those visitors spent $60 million during their stay in WA, making Japan the 11th largest market in terms of spend.

To help promote the flight, the Federal Government has committed $1million in marketing through Tourism Australia.

Mr Papalia said it had been a priority of state and federal government to secure the flight, with the intention of further adding direct routes between Perth, China, and India in the future.
