"We have been able to bring forward this part of the project by three years. If you think about the time each morning that people are spending waiting, sometimes for a kilometre to get their turn at the roundabout, multiply that by three years and that's a whole lot of quality of life that's being delivered," Ms Pulford said.

Improving the intersection is part of a major upgrade to a 10.7-kilometre stretch of Thompsons Road between Berwick-Cranbourne Road and EastLink, worth $207 million.

The first of two new bridges over the Cranbourne train line was recently opened, removing the level crossing at Merinda Park station.

Once the second bridge is complete, there will be two three-lane bridges running in both directions over the train line. Thompsons Road will also be duplicated across the 10.7-kilometre stretch.

Roundabouts at Western Port Highway and McCormicks Road will be replaced with traffic lights as part of the works, and cycling paths will be added to the area.

MP for Cranbourne Pauline Richards thanked the community for their understanding during the works.

"We know this has been a big disruption for locals and we thank them for their patience while we get on with the job of delivering this duplication and other key intersection improvements.”
