A man died after being struck by an ambulance on Cranbourne Road in Frankston on Monday morning.

Police believe the emergency van, a Mercedes, was travelling west on the main road, near Wattle Tree Lane, when it hit the pedestrian just before 2.30am.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was treated at the scene but died before being taken to hospital.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The death bring the state's road toll to 212 on the last day of 2018, down from 259 deaths on New Year's Eve last year.
