Ian Chappell believes national selectors have a “hell of a headache” given their limited-overs captain Aaron Finch is sinking deeper into a batting slump.

The right-hander has registered four single figure scores in his past seven ODIs - in which he has only passed 20 once – and 12 in 17 international white-ball innings since making his Test debut in October.

Finch has averaged 11.85 in ODI cricket since receiving his baggy green and 7.50 in T20Is.

Chappell believes Finch’s Test call-up was a double-edged sword given his struggles ever since.

“Probably the worst thing that happened to Aaron Finch was playing Test cricket,” Chappell told Wide World of Sports.

The former Australia captain said Finch is playing without confidence, which was a key part of his one-day batting.

Now there are just nine more scheduled ODIs before the World Cup, but Chappell suggested Finch may not be afforded every match to turn his form around.

“It’s a hell of a headache for the selectors,” he said.

“But you have to think about what’s worse, dropping him now or dropping him in the middle of the World Cup?”

Chappell said Pat Cummins would be the “outstanding candidate” should selectors make the shock move of dropping Australia’s captain.

Finch has previously touched on the impact becoming a Test player had had on his white-ball abilities.

He said in November: “In the UAE (where Finch made his Test debut) my technique really tightened up. Those technique changes have probably hurt me a bit in the one-dayers - I am not quite as free.

“It’s a more focused technique on keeping everything tight and straight and simple.

“It’s a few changes that are simple but I feel they give me the best chance in the longer format.”
