Historic former Hydro Village Waddamana tops the list of most expensive rent in Tasmania.

THE remote former Hydro village at Wadamanna has topped the list of the state’s most expensive rental locations in the last six months.

An analysis of rental bond data by the Mercury has found a 12-month lease at the Central Highlands town was the most expensive signed in the period at $3000 a week — although covering 15 bedrooms, it likely spread across multiple dwellings.

Sydney-based Genex Power managing director Michael Addison bought Waddamana village — 14 houses and two sheds on 17.8ha of land — for just $400,000 last year to house workers for the nearby wind power project.

The most expensive single dwelling rental was a two-bedroom house in Sandy Bay which is fetching $1800 a week.

That Hobart suburb topped the list of the highest number of properties in the top 100, with 27 and an average rent of $890 per week.

Nearby Battery Point was second on the list with 12 properties renting during the period and an average rent of $930 a week — the highest average rental.

Among the less common entries on the list was the West Coast shack community of Granville Harbour, where a property rented for $1000 a week and Miena, which had two properties on the list, at $700 and $800 per week.
