It’s not very often you rock up for an international flight at Sydney Airport to be greeted by Storm Troopers and other famous characters from the Star Wars franchise.

My flight to Los Angeles is an exception — Virgin Australia joined forces with Star Wars and the Walt Disney Company to celebrate the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edgeat Disneyland Resort in California — and I get to go along to give news.com.au readers a sneak peak!

But back to the Storm Troopers — they’re quite serious but happy to pose for a selfie because #whynot.

Chewbacca lingers in the distance as I check my bags in for boarding and proceed through customs. Virgin Australia ground staff wear Princess Leia buns and Yoda ears and I suddenly have never wanted something so much in my life!

I’m introduced to R2D2 by a George Lucas-look-a-like which is either a crazy coincidence, or a PR stunt well played — but watching George Lucas-look-a-like, R2D2 and Chewy all get into an elevator together is the real highlight.

As we board, we’re offered the cutest Darth Vader, C3PO and Storm Trooper cookies that I refuse to eat but cherish forever — and yes, at this point, I must confess, I am a diehard Star Wars fan so I’m like a kid in a candy shop.

Meanwhile, passengers travelling on this Virgin flight to Los Angeles are unaware of what’s going on — their surprised faces are priceless as Storm Troopers meet us at the boarding gate wishing us a safe journey.

As we make our way to our seats, we find we’ve each been given our own lightsaber (comes in handy in the event of First Order attacks), a Yoda pillow (comfort, I will have) and wait for it — a Star Wars inspired menu featuring Lunch-sabers, an Empire Strikes Snack and a Breakfast of Jedis.

At this point, I’m screaming with joy, internally of course.

Thankfully, there’s a few Star Wars fanatics on board and suddenly I don’t feel so out of place. One of them has even brought along a R2D2 carry-on suitcase and it’s next level.

Thirty minutes into the flight, the crew announce a “lightsaber competition”. Various passengers volunteer to dress up as Jedi Knights, walking up and down the aisles with their light sabres, swinging them around in such style that would make Luke Skywalker proud.

And when lunch is served, the cabin leader finishes his announcement by saying “May the forks be with you” and the pun is so corny, but I love it.

But the real fun is yet to come — we’re making out way to Disneyland Resort in California for a sneak peak of their new theme park Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

We’ll be going behind the scenes, showing you their brand new attractions — and this Star Wars fan can’t wait.

And while this Virgin flight will be a little bit longer than twelve parsecs, I don’t mind. After all, we are going to a galaxy far, far away!
