Shares of furniture and homewares retailers Adairs have jumped over 12 per cent from $1.56 up to $1.71 after the company met its revised June guidance and revealed strong online sales growth. The company, backed by retail veteran Brett Blundy, revealed like-for-like sales were up 7.2 per cent for the past financial year, and overall revenue increased 9.7 per cent to $344.4 million.

Net profit after tax took a hit, however, dropping 1.3 per cent to $29.6 million, and gross margins fell 110 basis points to 59.2 per cent, partially due to a weaker Australian dollar. Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) also took a dip down 2.4 per cent to $43.4 million. These numbers were all within new guidance the company provided in late June.

Investors were also buoyed by Adairs' strong growth in its online offering, which grew 41.7 per cent on a like-for-like basis and now contributes to 17 per cent of total sales for the business, or $58.8 million.

Adairs chief executive Mark Ronan said the result was a solid one in light of a "challenging macro and competitive environment", but noted the company's sales growth had failed to flow through to its bottom line.

"Our success however brought with it some growing pains within our distribution network that materially increased our operating costs and this, coupled with the weaker Australian dollar, offset the benefits of our sales growth," he said.

The company will pay a fully franked dividend of 14.5 cents on September 25, up 7.4 per cent on the year prior.
