An emergency warning has been issued for a grass fire burning out of control on Kangaroo Island under severe weather conditions.

The South Australian Country Fire Service (CFS) issued the warning for the fire burning near Harriet Road at Newland, saying the blaze is threatening property.

The CFS says the out-of-control shrub and crop fire is moving in a south easterly direction towards the East West Two Highway north of Vivonne Bay.

They advise people in the area to act now and leave if it is safe to do so as conditions are continuously changing.

The fire is being fanned by hot and dry winds and aerial bombers have been deployed to the area to help fight the fire.

The blaze has burned through about 40 hectares, according to the CFS.
