THE immaculate condition of a Newtown house offered for the first time since it was built in 1952 had buyers lining up at Saturday’s auction.

The three-bedroom weatherboard house on a 670sq m block at 32 Mervyn St caught the eye of multiple bidders keen to secure an address close to Pakington St’s shopping strip.

Wilson, Geelong agent James Wilson said the much-loved family home sold for $1.005 million under the hammer after “spirited bidding”.

The property is 300m from Newtown’s popular river end shopping strip and is right near Percy Reserve and St Robert’s primary school.

Mr Wilson said a Newtown resident attracted to the generous block size outlasted several potential buyers in the crowd.

“It was basically the land and the fact that the house was in a really comfortable state, they could live in it immediately,” Mr Wilson said.

“And it had a bit more space than where they are.”

The much-loved family home was offered for the first time since 1952.

Mr Wilson said Newtown continued to experience solid growth, with the Chilwell end in high demand.

Another property, two streets over at 31 Fairview Ave, Newtown also sold for $1.005 million at auction on Saturday, with two underbidders missing out.
