A teenage girl who was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in a central Queensland street is being remembered as an "extremely talented" young rugby league player with an "infectious smile".

Nilly Mooney, 15, died at the scene after she was hit by a car about 3.20am on Sunday in the Mackay suburb of Beaconsfield. A 29-year-old local woman has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of the Nicklin Drive collision.

Local Indigenous rugby league teams the Sapphires and the Diamonds paid tribute to Nilly as "a gem to be around".

"You were an extremely talented football player and such a gem to be around. Your infectious smile will be in our hearts and minds forever and always. Rest in peace baby girl," the teams, which play in the under 17's and women's competitions respectively, posted to their joint Facebook account.
