Before he plays a note Sebastian endears himself with several isolation anecdotes (“I gave myself a haircut, which has made me really value my hairdresser because I suck”) and some gentle, on-message reminders to “stay the heck away from each other”.

His 30-minute set kicks off with a gorgeous, slowed-down cover of A-ha’s ’80s perennial Take on Me, where he hits the eye-watering high notes with ease. The song was included after scoring multiple nominations following an Instagram call-out to fans asking what tunes to play.

The interactive nature of the event means there’s a constant scroll of on-screen comments from viewers, including Rob Mills ribbing his Australian Idol alumnus with a cheeky “Good boy” and Sebastian’s wife Jules adding a “love eyes” emoji, perhaps to stake her territory due to the occasional marriage proposal from gushing fans.

Sebastian controls his powerful voice with ease, filling every corner of the room with a stirring pop medley that leads from Take on Me into Phil Collins’ Against All Odds and Michael Jackson’s Earth Song.

From there Sebastian rolls into half a dozen of his own hits, including songs written for his wife (Set in Stone) and his son (Big Bad World).

His family makes charming cameos throughout the performance. At one point Jules feeds her husband lyrics as he sings an a cappella version of I Still Call Australia Home; another heartwarming moment finds their two sons providing back-up dancing while dad plays Choir on guitar.

Throughout the feel-good, off-the-cuff performance, Sebastian effortlessly demonstrates why he’s one of our best-loved entertainers, and when he advises us to “love each other, be kind, be patient, be safe,” he radiates sincerity.
