For the first time in the AFL’s history, the grand final will not be played in Victoria. Instead, the AFL’s most prized possession is heading north to the Gabba in Brisbane and will be played under lights in front of up to 30,000 fans.

In a year where the AFL and its clubs have lost hundreds of millions of dollars, many were calling for the AFL to host the grand final wherever it could recoup the most money. That theory led to many pushing the idea the grand final should be played at Perth's Optus Stadium, which, ideally, can host up to 60,000.

But in choosing Brisbane, the AFL has made the right decision. If the argument is purely based on commerce, Queensland has a very strong case.

The fact the Queensland government has been willing and able to host all clubs in the state at some point of the year has meant the AFL has been able to facilitate a 153-game season, plus finals. This has ensured the generation of vital broadcasting revenue that simply wouldn’t have come without the games.
