Two bidders contested the auction of 8 Downshire Road, Belmont on Saturday.

Young first-home buyers have seized their chance in a favourable market to swoop on a renovated riverside home in Belmont.

The couple paid $912,500 to secure a substantial four-bedroom house at 8 Downshire Road ahead of one other bidder at Saturday’s auction.

The sale was the first in tightly-held street in more than three years and eclipsed the previous highest recorded price by $300,000.

The house is just moments from the Barwon River.

McGrath, Geelong agent David Cortous said the chance to buy a 865sq m north-facing block walking distance from the Barwon River and Highton Village appealed to buyers.

“It was a nice big block and obviously near the river and it had been renovated inside,” Mr Cortous said.

“There was the back garden which had potential … it just ticked a lot of boxes.”

The open-plan kitchen/dining area has polished timber floors.

Raked ceilings are a highlight of this living room.

The renovated house offers multiple living rooms, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a separate self-contained bungalow.

Raking ceilings, timber floors and modern kitchen are among the interior highlights, while front and rear decks provide opportunities for outdoor entertaining.

This bathroom has been given the modern treatment.

Mr Cortous said buyer inquiry levels remained high, with buyers from outside Geelong still targeting the city.

He said a couple from Moama had just had an offer accepted on an Ocean Grove property which they had not seen.

Others were sending a buyer’s advocate or friend or family member to inspect on their behalf.
