Dally M leader Brett Morris has cast further doubt on the award’s subjective voting system, stunned to have outdone teammates James Tedesco and Luke Keary after another controversial weekend of polling.

Ageless Roosters star Morris, who became the first player in top grade history to score hat-tricks in the first two rounds of the season, was baffled with the early leaderboard having picked up a maximum six points after floggings of the Sea Eagles and Tigers.

And Morris thinks Tedesco is a victim of his own excellence when it comes to the voting, which overlooked Keary for even a single point in the Roosters’ 40-6 caning of the Tigers.

Keary had three try assists, two line breaks and a line break assist, but judge Sam Thaiday nominated Tigers fullback Daine Laurie for one point. Morris picked up three points and two-try hero Tedesco grabbed two. Thaiday is a commentator with Nine, owner of this masthead.

“I don’t know how they come up with that to be honest,” Morris said. “Teddy and Keary ... if those guys don’t do their jobs I don’t get the ball.

“The thing is, Teddy has taken his game to a new level where people expect him to play like that every week. But him playing like that is the best in the game - and he should be rewarded for that. He should be getting three points every week.

“Teddy’s normal game is far above every other bloke out there. That’s how highly I rate James Tedesco. I think it’s pretty unfair he’s missing out on these votes because I believe he’s the best in the game.

“When Teddy and Keary do it consistently I don’t feel they’re being rewarded. They’re still playing at an extremely high level week in week out and they don’t get recognised, but they should.
