“The threat is not over yet and we’re closely monitoring the flood levels in the Albert and Logan and Gold Coast catchments, with several rivers now at major flood levels.

“We urge residents in these areas to continue to listen to authorities and make sure everyone in the family knows the emergency plan.”

On Wednesday Gold Coast City Council staff were assessing damage across the region after a landslip on Mount Nimmel Road caused a section of road to be closed, and a landslip on Kirra Hill caused a lane to be closed.

Logan City Council was assessing dozens of damaged roads, however the full damage would not be known until the Logan River receded.

Disaster assistance was available to Gold Coast, Logan and Scenic Rim councils through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, after the extreme weather created landslips and damage to roads.

Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said many communities had been impacted by the extreme weather.

“The heavy rainfall and flooding have caused extensive damage to public and private property, with a number of vehicles being caught out by fast-moving water,” he said.

“The State Emergency Service have also been out helping the community throughout this event, responding to more than 400 requests for assistance, as people experience water through their roofs or coming up through the floor, as well as many trees that have fallen down, blocking roads and damaging properties.”

Most of Queensland’s affected areas are forecast to have a reprieve from the rain over coming days.

However, flooding was possible for the Macintyre, Condamine, Bulloo and Logan rivers, and Bremer River and Warrill Creek were also still under major flood warnings.

Bureau of Meteorologist James Thompson said severe thunderstorms were possible for central and eastern Queensland and parts of the far north and north-east tropic Thursday and Friday.
