Hello all, and TGIF.
1. Overseas travel is “back on the agenda” for Australians. That’s the headline in the Nine papers, but the story is, ah, a little more complicated. Scott Morrison is canvassing options for allowing Australians to travel overseas for funerals or business, before moving towards mass travel. These options could involve some hotel quarantine stay on return.
2. But he also suggested maybe allowing those who have been vaccinated to travel without quarantining. But that might lead to a lot of cases, he added. “If we were to lift the borders and people to come, then you would see those cases increase and Australians would have to become used to dealing with 1,000 cases a week or more,” he told Nine Radio. So the messaging is not very clear. But it’s clear the border issue is becoming a bit of a sore point.
3. Federal health authorities are investigating the death of a 48-year-old NSW woman who developed blood clots after receiving a COVID-19 shot. The ABC is reporting preliminary tests did not find a conclusive link to the vaccination, but that more tests are needed to confirm whether it played a role in her death.
4. Australia’s unemployment rate dipped to 5.6% in March, its lowest rate since pandemic restrictions kicked in a year ago. The unemployment rate was driven down 0.2 points from February levels thanks to the addition of 70,700 extra jobs. But the Australian Bureau of Statistics acknowledges the loss of JobKeeper will be represented in next month’s figures.
5. Further to that, employment portal SEEK says it recorded the highest number of new job listings in its 23-year history over March. Job listings are up a remarkable 75.1% over the same period in 2020, speaking to the labour market’s recovery from COVID-19 restrictions. But many of the new listings “are for roles that were displaced in the last year,” SEEK says, raising questions about further job creation.
6. Zip co-founder Peter Gray has revealed the company is planning to expand into a trading platform. In comments made to the Dow Jones newswires, Gray said Zip was considering offering cryptocurrency and stock trading options out of its existing app. Zip confirmed the announcement to Business Insider Australia, as it looks towards future growth markets.
7. Social media and online forums like Reddit have become the go-to source of information for one in three Australian traders, according to a new survey. Coming at the same time as a global pandemic, lockdowns and easy money, it represents a “perfect storm” for markets, according to TradingView director of Australian growth Glenn Leese. While social media can be incredibly useful, Leese says that without financial literacy many Australian traders have unknowingly taken on significant risk.
8. Jeff Bezos has sent his final shareholder letter as CEO of Amazon. “You have to create more than you consume,” Bezos says in the letter. “Your goal should be to create value for everyone you interact with.” He also defends Amazon as “Earth’s best employer and Earth’s safest place to work” – a direct refutation of repeated allegations from delivery and warehouse employees who say they’re overworked, and are forced to pee in bottles to save time.
9. About 5,800 of 75 million fully vaccinated Americans have gotten COVID-19, according to the CDC. Of those, 74 died. Such “breakthrough” cases are to be expected, the CDC said, as vaccines aren’t 100% effective. They’re rare, affecting about 0.008% of vaccinated people, but more common in older adults.
10. 1 million people have now died from COVID-19 in Europe, a top World Health Organisation doctor said. WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said COVID-19 remains a “serious” issue even as more people get vaccinated. Meanwhile, India has recorded more than 200,000 daily COVID-19 cases for the first time.
