A Sydney dentist has been stripped of his registration after performing surgery on a patient while his genitals were exposed.
The Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) launched action against Peter David Carr in the New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT).
Dr Carr was last year found guilty of unsatisfactory and unethical conduct by NCAT for having his “semi-erect penis and testicles” out while working at the Smile Dental practice in Double Bay in 2016.
A female dental assistant noticed the exposure beneath his dental gown when picking up an item off the floor.
Documents showed Dr Carr explained his version of the incident to the Dental Council of NSW several months later, stating he may have forgotten to secure his trouser buttons after going to the bathroom in a hurry and was most likely not wearing underpants.
The 76-year-old was also convicted in court of a string of offences for three separate incidents in 2016 including pushing his dental nurse against a wall while attempting to kiss her, slapping her buttocks with his hand and opening her scrubs after forcefully grabbing her shoulder.
Dr Carr was found guilty of one count of common assault and two counts of aggravated indecent assault.
The tribunal also found the dentist guilty of “unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct” based on criminal findings, including the possession of cocaine at a Sydney nightclub in 2016.
Dr Carr was given a good behaviour bond for cocaine possession.
The dentist also failed to notify the Dental Board of Australia within the required time period that he had been charged with drug possession.
He was also found guilty by NCAT of inappropriately using the “hypnotic agent”, Triazolam, in his practice and giving it inappropriately to a restrained patient.
In last year’s hearing, the tribunal was told he was not properly trained to safely administer that drug.
In its second hearing in February this year, Dr Carr was seeking to have his registration suspended for a further six to 12 months rather than be cancelled.
He also suggested he could undertake professional development courses, including ethics and sexual boundaries.
The tribunal decided on Monday to cancel Dr Carr’s registration as a dentist, and that he would not be able to apply to “review that order for a period of one year” from the decision date.
