1. In what is quickly shaping up to be an international incident, Belarus appears to have orchestrated the arrest of a dissident journalist by diverting his flight with KGB agents reportedly onboard. Ryanair was forced to land in Minsk due to a “security threat”, delivering journalist Roman Protasevich to authorities after Protasevich had criticised President Alexander Lukashenko. A video then appeared with a bruised-looking Protasevich “confessing” to planning riots. The White House is now calling for an immediate investigation into the whole affair.

2. Amazon is reportedly getting ready to buy an entire movie studio. Said to be worth $US9 billion, the deal would see Amazon swallow MGM, the company behind the James Bond and Rocky films, as soon as this week. It could see the streaming platform add a catalogue of around 4,000 films and 17,000 TV episodes to its own offering.

3. Australians could win money by getting vaccinated. A similar effort has cropped up in the United States where those vaccinated are entered into a lottery to win $US1 million. Chief medical officer Paul Kelly said the idea and other incentives were “potentially on the table” as a way to get the rollout back on track. Not everyone is excited.

4. Scientists have developed a ‘breathalyser’ that can detect COVID-19 within a single minute. Singapore researchers made the breakthrough which could make it easier, quicker, and cheaper to detect the virus, potentially helping countries quickly open up their borders and test incoming passengers. With 90% accuracy, a swab test can then be used to confirm positive cases.

5. The AFR has revealed Australia’s ‘new rich’. The annual Rich List has 20 new debutantes on it this year, including some very interesting names. Take Grant Petty’s Melbourne-based Blackmagic Design which has provided the gear behind 20 of the 30 highest-grossing films of all times. The $1.6 billion business has catapulted him up the list, along with 19 other names to watch.

6. A designer has accused Converse of stealing her shoe designs. Cecilia Monge took to TikTok to accuse the sneaker company of using a pitch she sent them back in 2019 and designed a new range with it. While Converse confirmed Monge had applied for their internship program, where she says she communicated the ideas, the company denies the accusations.

7. One in three Australians say they’ll be “much worse off” than older generations, as they grapple with their future economic security. Amid a decade of wage stagnation and skyrocketing house prices, young Aussies are pessimistic they’ll be afforded any of the opportunities given to their parents.

8. Australia’s youngest billionaire is helping grow some of Australia’s fastest-growing startups. Afterpay co-founder Nick Molnar, valued at $2.2 billion, has been backing the likes of investment platform Superhero and LinkTree among others. One recipient explains the three drivers behind his foray into angel investing.

9. South Australia universities are pleading with the federal government to open up the borders. After being hit by a 33% fall in enrolments, the sector says enough is enough and says Australia can have confidence that it can handle its own quarantine arrangements as unis struggle to make up for millions of dollars of lost revenue.

10. The crypto market bounced overnight. Bitcoin lifted by around 15% after a vicious run over the last week. Meanwhile Ethereum moved 40% higher to surpass $US2,500 as the market consolidates amid a $US1 trillion selloff.
