NSW flags desire for dedicated quarantine site

The New South Wales government says it would welcome a Commonwealth-run quarantine facility to help bring more Australians home.

It comes just days after a deal was reached for a 500-bed facility in Victoria.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said while the state's hotel quarantine had been successful, a separate facility could also be beneficial.

"We'll be speaking to the Commonwealth government and putting a proposal to them, as we should, because … the next 12 months will be very different to the last 12 months.

"We've been incredibly successful during this pandemic but that doesn't mean that we rest on our laurels and sit still; we need to have our thinking evolve and look at new ways of doing things."

NSW recorded no new locally acquired coronavirus cases, while there were five overseas cases reported in the 24 hours to 8:00pm last night.

Mr Perrottet would not speculate on a possible location for a federal-funded quarantine facility in NSW.

However, criteria released by the federal government on Friday said it must be close to an international airport and within an hour's drive of a specialist hospital.

Mr Perrottet said while NSW had done the heavy lifting when it came to hotel quarantine, a dedicated facility would alleviate the pressure from the hotel quarantine system.

"The reality is that hotels are hotels, they aren't quarantine facilities," he said.
