King of the castles – 3 Glenview St, Gordon.
They may be dotted throughout the green rolling hills of Ireland, but castles are a rarity in suburban Sydney.
Killarney Castle was inspired by the historic homes of the Emerald Isle and today the slice of Irish life down under is a unique landmark in leafy Gordon.

Irish-born auctioneer Thomas Edward Taylor chose the site because of its similarities with Killarney in Ireland then he set about building his dream home between 1905 and 1918.
Officially opened by NSW Governor Sir Walter Davidson in 1918, 3 Glenview Rd was once part of a larger 98-acre land parcel, but now occupies approximately 1290sqm of landscaped grounds.
Made of hand-hewed sandstone that was quarried on site, the castle was meticulously constructed in keeping with the traditional grand manors of Taylor’s homeland, complete with battlements and a turret tower.
Of course it has a pool room.
The welcoming foyer is a step back in time with beautiful lead light windows, high ornate ceilings and a grand carpeted staircase.
Each room on the ground floor features a host of traditional finishes, but it isn’t all about days gone by because the stately residence has been transformed into a stylish 21st century home with plenty of contemporary renovations.
The modernised kitchen has intricate timber joinery, Gaggenau appliances, a walk-in pantry and an adjoining conservatory-style meals area.
For more formal soirees the large dining room is the ideal spot for a banquet and a warming whiskey in front of the fireplace, then guests can retire to the elegant living room which steps out to a circular stone terrace.
The level is also home to a separate family room and office.
The upper bedroom level has a stone terrace overlooking the gardens and stairs leading up to a secret turret room and rooftop with panoramic views.
The kitchen has a splash of colour.
There is more space to spread out downstairs in the lower level multipurpose studio, a gym, wine cellar and double lock up garage. There’s also a pool, terraces, and games room with bar.
Ben Cohen, from Sydney Sotheby’s International, is expecting plenty of interest in the property, which has a guide of $5.25m to $5.75m.
