19 Barnfather St, Thomson sold for $620,000 at auction on Saturday.

Thomson reinforced its reputation as a sleeper suburb to watch with another big auction result that landed $100,000 above expectation.

A Melbourne buyer was one of three bidders that pushed the price of an original two-bedroom house at 19 Barnfather St.

A 744sq m block boosted the value of the weatherboard home that sold under the hammer for $620,000.

Hayeswinckle, East Geelong agent Adam Murphy said the result was the latest of the string of strong sales in the neighbourhood, which he described as a “little ripper”.

“With that one the block size was important to all of them,” Mr Murphy said.

“The people who bought it liked it for the potential.

“I think Thomson is a sleeping giant because of the location between Geelong and East Geelong.

“The quality of the homes is rising and we have seen a pretty big lift in the last six month.”

With a median house price of $454,000, Thomson is considered by many real estate pundits to be an up-and-coming suburb with a fair bit of growth ahead of it.

The former housing commission estate has become a popular market for buyers priced out of nearby East Geelong and even Newcomb.

Another home just up the road at 29 Barnfather St last month sold for $750,000, $150,000 above reserve.

Eleven bidders put their hand up for the modern three-bedroom house that offered almost 952sq m of land.
