Rapper and former Kardashian clickbait Kanye West is one of the most forward-looking figures in fashion, but the Yeezy designer’s recent style duet demonstrates that he’s not afraid of doffing a trucker cap to the classics.

At the debut runway show for luxury label Kenzo’s latest creative director Nigo in Paris, West and new paramour Julia Fox flaunted their budding relationship in double denim. Proving that the pre-millennium rule of having the tops and bottoms of Canadian Tuxedos in different washes is irrevocably broken, West and Fox took a rigid approach in complete light denim looks.

West (also known as Ye, but we are waiting to see whether this sticks longer than his fling with supermodel Irina Shayk) wore over-sized Balenciaga, the label immortalised by ex-wife Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala with her face covered by a black hood. Rising actress Fox, who appeared in the Adam Sandler movie Uncut Gems, expressed herself through Schiaparelli.

The cropped jacket with a conical bra detail, reminiscent of Jean Paul Gaultier’s wardrobe for Madonna’s Blond Ambition tour in 1990, was a prompt for journalists to include Fox’s potential upcoming role in the singer’s biopic, as previously hinted on her Instagram account.

“Kanye’s style recently has been defined by a revival of workwear, think utilitarian workman boots and gumboots ripped from the tradies,” said Liz Roberts, chief executive of Australian denim label One Teaspoon. “Paint splattered jeans, and denim, are very tradie/workman style.”

On the stiff surface, double denim can be interpreted as a symbol of working class pride, but being chauffeur-driven to exclusive fashion shows in Paris undermines this approach, making it clear that West and Fox planned on honouring the patron saint of the revenge dress, Princess Diana.

West is in the process of divorcing Kim Kardashian since officially splitting in February, and only met Fox on New Year’s Eve, but committing to couple-dressing shows how far things have progressed in 25 days of dating. With Jonah Hill and partner Sarah Brady making it clear at the premiere of Don’t Look Up in December that matching wardrobes are back, West and Fox have gone straight to the top in their denim double-up, referencing former pop sweethearts Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s legendary look at the American Music Awards in 2001.

“It’s a very ‘ride or die’ look and marks a new era,” Roberts said. “Matching denim, the same vibe, they’re showing they’re on the same page with a commitment to the same look.”
