Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva made history Monday at the Beijing Winter Olympics, landing two quadruple jumps at the end of the team competition.
Before her routine, no female skater had ever landed a quad in the Olympics.
Valieva's efforts were rewarded with a gold medal for her and her teammates representing the Russian Olympic Committee. The United States won the silver, and Japan won the bronze.
In other action Monday, Swiss skier Beat Feuz won the men's downhill event that was postponed a day because of high winds. It was the first Olympic gold medal for Feuz, who won a silver and a bronze at the 2018 Winter Games.
This is the second Olympics to be held during the coronavirus pandemic. As with last year's Summer Olympics in Tokyo, a raft of Covid-19 countermeasures have been put in place and the Games will be held inside what authorities have called a "closed loop system" — a bubble completely cut off from the rest of the city. Tickets for the Games will not be sold to the general public; they will be distributed by authorities instead.
Beijing is the first city in history to host both a Summer and a Winter Olympics.
