When John and Anne Duncan bought Pevensey House in 2007, its status as an iconic Geelong property was standing firm, but its ability to deliver a level of comfort was in doubt.

Still, their architect John Mitchell advised the couple to live in the historic house for a few years before doing any renovations.

“It was very cold in winter,” Mr Duncan recalls.

“We had fireplaces virtually in every room, but we would light the fireplace in the back dining area, close the doors and go into a sort of lockdown.”

Today, the transformed residence reflects the lessons of those years.

It has hydronic heating and airconditioning throughout and a stunning open-plan living extension that has become the heart of the home.

Sitting on a 1136sqm block, overlooking Pevensey Park, the grand two-storey home with its distinctive, octagonal tower is a landmark in the area.

It was built in 1891 for businessman Robert Scott and is recognised as one of Victoria’s most impressive homes of that era.

The Duncans’ investment in its restoration has not only added modern comforts and overhauled basics such as electricity and plumbing, but enhanced an array of period features. There are nine fireplaces, a host of extraordinary leadlight windows and soaring, decorative ceilings.

The vast entrance hall sets the tone for what’s to come.

A vision of grandeur, it features archways, marble floors, a chandelier and a grand, mahogany staircase.

So it’s no surprise that room after room is impressive: a large bay window, framed in leadlight, captures views of the park from the formal lounge room; the dining room has an antique, built-in bar; and upstairs, the master wing has its own sitting room, balcony, bathroom and home office.

Of the two other upstairs bedrooms, one has views over the park and a balcony, and the other has a stunning ensuite and separate sunroom with kitchenette.

Post-renovation, the downstairs floorplan has adopted the flow of a modern home.

While there is a formal dining room and separate sitting room, the rear of the home is devoted to an open-plan kitchen and living room, albeit with very high ceilings (one of the things Mr Duncan loves the most about living at Pevensey House).

The kitchen is fitted with marble benchtops and state-of-the-art appliances, and a wall of bespoke steel-framed windows captures a view over the pool and gardens.

Both the front and back gardens deserve special mention.

Pevensey House was once surrounded by cottage gardens.

Today, thanks to the work of Inverleigh gardener Angelo Zaval, the home’s stately facade is complemented by formal manicured gardens and hedges.

The owners admit they’ll miss the home and the delights of its surrounds.

“I love Eastern Park, that’s where I do my exercise, and walking around the botanic gardens and the beachfront,” said Mr Duncan.

“It’s just lovely having that openness.”

Expressions of interest for Pevensey House, at 17 Pevensey Crescent, Geelong, close on November 4.

Price hopes are $5.9m to $6.49m.
