A court has heard a delivery driver was not wearing a seatbelt because he was going door to door at low speeds — and was operating under an exemption known as the "milkman defence" when stopped by police.

Paramveer Singh allegedly drove without a seatbelt, including through a major intersection in the Hobart CBD, in January before he was stopped by a Tasmanian Police officer.
He has pleaded not guilty to one charge of failing to wear a seatbelt.
Prosecutor Edith Bevin told the Hobart Magistrates Court that video from a police body-worn camera showed the defendant did not deny he was not wearing a seatbelt, but he said he had an exemption because he was a delivery driver.
"This exemption is also known as the milkman defence," Ms Bevin said.
