A historic convent that used to be the home of “trailblazer nuns” from the 1800s has been listed for sale in western Sydney after being held by the church for more than 139 years.

The 4,000sq m parcel comprising three titles has attracted interest from a range of religious and secular groups all vying to take advantage of the size and potential usage on offer.

The chapel dates back to 1883.

While the site features an original chapel built for the Sisters of the Good Samaritan in 1883, it is not protected by a heritage listing.

Selling agent Stephen Brodie said he had received inquiries from the Maronite church, as well as Hindu and Muslim groups who were considering acquiring the religious site.

A 1970s built convent is attached to the original church.

He said a range of prospective buyers had also contacted the local council regarding the site’s potential for use as an aged care facility, youth or rehabilitation facility or as a daycare centre.

Mr Brodie said the site had a rich history after the Sisters of the Good Samaritan set up St Joseph’s convent in a rented house in Windsor with the help of Sydney’s first Catholic bishop Bede Polding in 1875.

A few years later the convent was moved to a presbytery at its current address on Mileham St and a chapel was constructed in 1883.

Around the same time St Joseph’s high school opened at the site and continued until 1962.

By the 1970s the historic building had become costly to maintain and the church decided to demolish it but retain the chapel.

A new single level convent was constructed and attached to the chapel, resulting in the unique property being offered to the market.

It includes 4,000sq m of land.

“It’s certainly got historical significance,” Mr Brodie said.

“Windsor was an outpost. In the old days a lot of the priests came out on horseback.”

“A lot of the sisters initially set up here were trailblazers. Their job was to set up and help people in different ways in an area.”

The property is going to auction on January 31 at 6pm with a price guide of $2.5m.
