Almost 13,000 hectares in south-east Queensland have been earmarked for future housing developments as planners search for ways to find homes for 1 million extra Queenslanders by 2036.

Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Steven Miles has acknowledged the difficulties caused by rapid population growth in the state’s south-east.

And, mirroring the approach by Brisbane City Council in December 2022, the government on Thursday announced 75 locations within 11 south-east council areas for housing developments.

“So far, we know just over 12,700 hectares of potential residential land has been identified as being developable,” Miles said.

The land will have to go through local government development applications, and must also fit within environmental “no-go” guidelines proposed by federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek and Queensland Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon before Christmas.

Miles said closer involvement in the new SEQ Regional Plan by the expanded Queensland Supply Expert Panel would mean a closer watch on population growth trends.

The deputy premier pointed to Queensland’s low unemployment rate (3.6 per cent) and record exports boom in 2022.

“In the 2018 financial year, just over 24,000 people moved to Queensland. Four years later – at the end of 2022 – that number had increased to 55,000 new residents,” Miles said.
