The airport warned there may be queues on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until April 25, as they tend to be the busiest days to travel over holiday periods.

Parashos also advised booking car parks as far in advance as possible and asked passengers to be patient over the busy period.

“We know this is an exciting but busy time, so we ask people to be patient and respectful as the team works to get you where you need to be as quickly and safely as possible,” Parashos said.

Last week, Sydney Airport boss Geoff Culbert took a swing at airlines for scheduling and subsequently cancelling services on flights between Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane – dubbed the Golden Triangle – and said high airfares, reduced airline capacity and outdated regulation had resulted in stagnant domestic recovery.

Unlike Sydney Airport, Melbourne is not constrained by a curfew and has been less affected by ground program delays and air traffic control-related staffing issues, which has allowed a speedier recovery.

Melbourne Airport chief Lorie Argus last week also welcomed new carrier Bonza to its first capital city base. Bonza will fly two Boeing 737 Max 8s in and out of Melbourne Airport on up to 24 services each week. It’s unclear when or if the carrier will gain entry to Sydney Airport as there are currently no free slots.

“We’re not slot constrained in Melbourne, we’re 24/7, and the team do an extraordinary job to make sure we can continue to accept new entrants and the growth that we’re going to see domestically and internationally,” Argus said ahead of Bonza’s first flight from Melbourne to the Sunshine Coast last week.
