A mother is dead and her family is grieving as homicide detectives probe what they are describing as a "horrific" and "extreme" case of family violence.
Key points:
- Police are treating the woman's death as a homicide
- They've described it as a 'horrific' case of family violence
- A man is in police custody
Police were called to a home on Birkett Street in Bedford around 5pm on Monday, about 6 kilometres north-east of Perth's CBD.
They were confronted with the woman's body inside the house and members of the family were at the scene, visibly distraught.
WA Police Inspector Geoff DeSanges said the woman's injuries were horrific and confirmed a weapon wasn't used.
"A woman lost her life last night to extreme violence," he told a press conference on Tuesday.
"Violence of any nature especially against women, children or other vulnerable victims is unacceptable.
"We do believe she's a mother, but we haven't formally identified her yet.
"I'd like to acknowledge the first responders, the police officer, St John Ambulance and the paramedics who attended the horrific, confronting scene last night.
"They've been provided the support they require," he said.
Inspector DeSanges said police had been to the residence before.
A man is in custody, but no charges have been laid.
Police say they believe the woman was in a domestic relationship with him.
Family devastated and in disbelief
A friend of the woman, who did not want to be identified, described her to the ABC as a well-spoken and loving mother.
The woman's aunt took to social media on Tuesday to pay tribute to her niece.
"It feels like it's all a bad dream," she said.
"I'm totally broken on every level… (she) was a daughter, sister, Mum, granddaughter, niece, cousin, aunty and friend to many, who all loved her so much.
"We are all devastated and in disbelief."
The mother is the second woman suspected to have been killed from domestic violence in two weeks in WA.
Georgia Lyall, 32, was found dead inside her home in South Guildford on July 27.
