Tens of thousands of teenagers from more than 100 countries, including more than 900 Australians, have been evacuated from the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in a logistical exercise of military-like precision.

As Typhoon Khanun bears down on the country, the South Korean government announced on Monday that all scouts and volunteers attending the event would be relocated from the campsite in Saemangeum, four hours south of Seoul.

On Tuesday morning, under the direction of the Jamboree Government Emergency Response Team, about 37,000 scouts from 156 countries left the jamboree site, Interior and Safety Minister Lee Sang-min said.

"That's one bus every 30 seconds," wrote Australian scout leaders in an email to parents.

Buses are currently transporting the 37,000 scouts to eight different South Korean provinces, where they will be accommodated in university and school halls until the jamboree officially concludes on Friday.

"To ensure participants' safety during transportation, four police helicopters are providing aerial guidance, and 273 patrol cars and patrol motorcycles are escorting the buses."

Camp continues in Seoul for Aussies

Australia's contingent of scouts is currently travelling to Seoul, where they will be staying in hotels as they continue their jamboree experience.

"We are looking forward to spending time in Seoul, catching up with new international friends and attending the live-streamed jamboree closing ceremony," the Australian scout leaders said.

"The entire city will turn into a travelling jamboree."

After already causing destruction and multiple injuries in southern Japan, Typhoon Khanun is forecast to reach the now-deserted jamboree campsite as early as Wednesday evening.

The World Scout Jamboree began on August 1 amid heatwave conditions and infrastructure and sanitation concerns, with the US and UK contingents announcing they were pulling out of the event on Friday.
