A 68-year-old Melbourne man is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with the 1999 murder of Irma Palasics after an extradition hearing in Victoria today.

Steve Fabriczy was arrested yesterday after the biggest breakthrough in the 24-year investigation into the murder of the 73-year-old Canberra woman.

Mrs Palasics was found dead after she and her husband were tied up and beaten by two men in a home invasion and robbery, while her husband Gregor was hospitalised with severe injuries.

The Dandenong Magistrates court heard Mr Fabriczy recently admitted to police he had been in the house but denied having any part of an assault.

Police told the court he was initially identified through a DNA database.

The court ordered he be extradited to Canberra to face court tomorrow.

More to come.
