Tasmania's Attorney-General Elise Archer has resigned from cabinet, after being asked to by Premier Jeremy Rockliff.

Ms Archer said she will also resign from the parliament.

Mr Rockliff said he requested Ms Archer’s resignation from cabinet — which she provided — during a meeting this morning, after he was made aware of remarks that were unacceptable.

Ms Archer later issued a statement saying she would also resign from parliament.

Leaked WhatsApp messages included insults towards Mr Rockliff and former premier Peter Gutwein, as well as former cabinet minister Sarah Courtney and Ms Archer's personal staff.

Mr Rockliff said the remarks made by Ms Archer in leaked WhatsApp messages would not be accepted.

"Those remarks are unacceptable by any standard, unequivocally fall short of expectations for a minister of the crown," Mr Rockliff said.

"As a consequence of this, Ms Archer is no longer a member of my cabinet.

"As I sad this week, if culture is to change in this state, it requires leadership and accountability. That starts from the top.

The messages were leaked amid newspaper reports at least two current or former staff members of Ms Archer have raised allegations of bullying and inappropriate behaviour with Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Sarah Bolt. 

Ms Archer's resignation will prompt a recount in Clark, which the Liberal Party is expected to win, retaining its current numbers in the lower house.

First elected in 2010, Ms Archer had been Attorney-General since 2018, and also had ministerial responsibility for workplace safety.
