Melbourne-based mixed media artist Tom Adair and his wife Nikki, a former fashion buyer and designer, are selling their eclectic labour of love in the heart of Richmond.

Mr Adair was previously the head homewares designer for Australian furniture label Jardan before becoming a full-time artist about five years ago.

He specialises in neon lights, graffiti, stencils and graphic art, with his work displayed in Sydney contemporary gallery Nanda Hobbs and US-based gallery Axiom in Phoenix, Arizona.

The artist is currently up for the 2023 Fishers Ghost Prize – his third time nominated for the award – and has also been a finalist for the 2021 Kings School Art Prize and the 2022 Omnia Art Prize.

After purchasing the 3 Cotter St home as a small, weatherboard Victorian cottage back in 2010, the couple embarked on a mammoth flip, completely transforming the 1890-built home into the vibrant inner-city oasis seen today.

They engaged architect Nicholas Murray and interior designer Fiona Lynch to bring their vision of a spacious, light-filled home filled with quality features to life.

“We wanted to build it exactly how we wanted to live so we made sure everything was overly generous,” Mr Adair said.

“The main bedroom is huge with a massive ensuite and the same with the second bedroom.”

He said all of the materials used were high-end with no expense spared.

“We didn’t want to cut any corners,” he said.

The kitchen opens out to a barbecue area.

Mr Adair added that his art career took off shortly after the renovation was completed, with the house inspiring many of his works.

“In some ways the house informed the artwork I was making … I was imagining that the art would go into the house which sort of flowed into my career,” he said.

He also traded pieces to feature work from various other artists in his home, including the likes of Richard Blackwell, Michael Staniak and Simon Davidson.

Now with 18-month-old son Arkley, named after Australian artist Howard Arkley, in tow, the pair are upsizing and looking for a new project.

The Richmond pad is listed with a $1.9m-$2.05m price tag with Survivor contestant and Biggin & Scott Port Melbourne agent Fraser Lack.

“It’s really cool because of the way it’s been furnished and presented,” Mr Lack said.

“It’s had such a glow up.”

Some of the luxe inclusions at the home are marble and brass fittings in the bathrooms, plus timber floorboards with underfloor heating throughout, and integrated Sonos speakers.

The glamorous kitchen boasts chic grey cupboards concealing bright pink interiors, as well as a built-in Vintec wine fridge, all flowing out to an outdoor deck with a terrazzo tiled barbecue area.

“It’s definitely a special one for us, we’ll be sad to see it go,” Mr Adair added.

“But we hope someone who appreciates good quality design will purchase it and look after it and enjoy it as much as we did.”
