Veteran editor Luke McIlveen has been appointed executive editor of Nine’s metro mastheads, including The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times and WAToday.

The founding editor of Daily Mail Australia and former editor-in-chief of news.com.au joins Nine in late January to replace Tory Maguire, who was last week appointed managing director of Nine’s publishing division.

Maguire said McIlveen is one of the country’s most senior and experienced editors, with standout digital audience expertise.

“He has a proven track record leading newsrooms to exceed their targets and is perfectly placed to help drive the continued transformation, innovation and high-quality journalism Nine’s metro mastheads have achieved in recent years,” Maguire said.

“I’m delighted he has agreed to join the team.”

Starting his career at The Australian, which included a stint in the Canberra press gallery, McIlveen went on to hold senior editorial roles at The Daily Telegraph and The Manly Daily, before editing news.com.au and Daily Mail Australia.

Before joining Nine, he spent six years as executive editor of Fox Sports.

McIlveen said he was thrilled and honoured to lead the talented team of editors and journalists across the four mastheads.
